Introduction: Do It Yourself Mondays

Another regular to be showing his face around My Paper Airplane would have to be Mr. "Do It Yourself Mondays." These posts stem from the observation that:

a. "Doing things yourself" seems to be pretty popular these days.

and

b. That there are many -
gazillion-bazillion-trillion- D.I.Y projects presented out there and few that actually provide you with step-by-step, thorough instructions.

My plan is to find D.I.Y projects that have been presented elsewhere on the internet, and then document myself doing them with any tips or suggestions I have for making the process more efficient or
more appealing. I will be presenting these posts on Mondays, so forget beginning-of-the-week-blues, come stop by My Paper Airplane and be inspired by whatever Do It Yourself Monday project is taking place.

Introduction: Pretend Weddings and Inspiration Boards

Inspiration comes in many shapes and sizes:

the way a paper is folded,
crumbs on a table,
a friend,
the shape of a building,
a beautiful image,
the smell of muffins baking in the oven,
a video,
a book,
a nail polish color,
the blue sky,
the wrinkles on an elephant at the zoo,
an artist,
a typeface,
textures,
the mistake you drew with your pen,
the complimentary colors that naturally occur in nature,
or a pretend wedding.

... come again? Pretend wedding? Perhaps the idea of dreaming up a wedding you likely have no intention of participating in sounds crazy, and well, maybe it is. However, inspiration can be found in make-believe, which is exactly what I intend to do with every pretend wedding submitted. The purpose of submitting a pretend wedding (which you can do by clicking on the tab above) is to provide me with some real life ideas. With your submitted ideas I can then practice taking your vision and find visuals that fit that vision. I will then compose the images into a collage and post them to My Paper Airplane to view. Images will be taken from various websites and sources. You can trust that all images used will be sited properly back to the original source.

It's really just a bit of fun. Who doesn't like dreaming about weddings and viewing lovely things collaged in a magazine-style format?

In Pursuit of the Dream Job

Through the process of planning my own wedding, my dream job was finally realized: weddings. To be involved in the wedding industry, I decided, would be the ultimate creative endeavor. Upon moving to Portland I decided to pursue a degree in Art Practices to educate myself in all areas of art and design with the goal of discovering how I would best fit into this limitless industry: graphic design? printmaking? cakes? photography? design? flowers? coordinating? business owner? You name it, I've thought about it. Now with the bulk of my degree behind me, and an internship in front of me, I can say that I am 98% sure that being a Wedding Planner is for me. As I anticipate the next stage of my life (graduating among other things) I am left wondering what do I do now? I have learned a ton from my college career but am ready for more. I am stuck in this place of knowing what I want, but wondering how on earth I get there. I have decided that while I'm still in school and working, journaling and researching is one of the most useful ways to spend my time.

Which brings me to the purpose of this blog. This blog is my outlet, my creative space, my journal of sorts. It is an online supplement to the physical sketchbook I have sitting right here next to my computer; a place for me to document what I'm learning, and what I'm seeing in hopes that the good stuff will stick and I'll be a more successful Planner for it. So here we go, I'm diving in, and you're more than welcome to join me for the ride. Here's to all things weddings...
